Topography, landmarks, and chart reading

A sectional is a 1:500,000 portrait of the terrain you're flying over. Pilotage lives or dies on reading it — both the lay of the land and the symbols stacked on top of it.

Reading terrain

  • Contour lines connect points of equal elevation; tightly spaced lines mean steep terrain.
  • Elevation tints are color-coded by altitude — greens are the lowest ground, tans and yellows are mid elevations, browns are high terrain, and the highest areas shade lightest toward gray. It's a one-glance read of where the high ground is before you read a single number.
  • Maximum Elevation Figure (MEF) — the large number in each quadrangle (a bold figure like 2⁷) is the highest terrain or obstacle in that quad, in hundreds of feet MSL, with a buffer added. A "27" means something reaches 2,700 ft MSL in that box — plan to clear it, not skim it.
  • Spot elevations flag specific peaks with a dot and an MSL number.

Terrain reading also sets your minimum safe altitude. Scan the MEFs along the route, take the highest figure, and plan to cruise above it — the MEF already folds in the tallest obstacle in each quad plus a buffer, so it's the conservative number you want. On a hazy afternoon, into low sun, or on a night cross-country, that margin is what keeps an unseen ridge or an unlit tower out of your flight path. It's also why the high-ground color tints are worth a glance before you read a single number: they tell you at once which way the terrain rises.

The chart also carries reference grids: the latitude/longitude ticks (every 30 minutes, subdivided to the minute) let you read a precise position, and the compass rose drawn around each VOR is oriented to magnetic north — a built-in reference for the variation in that area.

Scale, distance, and currency

At 1:500,000, one inch on a sectional is about 6.9 NM — measure leg distances with the plotter's nautical-mile scale rather than by eye, and you can read your latitude and longitude straight off the grid ticks if you need to give a position. Charts also expire: VFR sectionals are reissued on a published cycle, and an out-of-date chart can miss a new tower or an airspace change. Fly the current edition.

Obstructions and their symbols

  • Towers and obstacles show both heights: MSL on top (bold) and AGL in parentheses below.
  • Obstacles over 1,000 ft AGL get the larger symbol; lighted obstacles wear a lightning-burst.
  • Clusters of obstacles get a combined symbol — worth noticing when you pick an altitude near an antenna farm, where a single tower can top 2,000 ft AGL.

Choosing checkpoints that work

The best checkpoints are unique, unambiguous, and visible from altitude:

  • Highway–railroad–river intersections, distinctively shaped lakes, isolated towns.
  • Avoid features that repeat (one of several parallel section roads) or vanish (a small creek under haze, a field that looks like every other field).

A practical example: crossing open farmland, a lone grain-elevator town at a highway-and-rail crossing beats "the third road past the river" every time — you'll spot the elevator from fifteen miles out, and there's only one of it. When a symbol stumps you, the chart legend (and the Aeronautical Chart Users' Guide) is the authority — and yes, the examiner may point at one and ask.
