ACS tolerances for spin awareness

The Private Pilot Airplane ACS (FAA-S-ACS-6C, effective May 31, 2024) anchors spin-awareness tolerances around recovery from an approach-to-spin condition before it fully develops. There's only one skill standard (VII.D.S1) — the rest of the task is knowledge (K1-K3) and risk (R1-R2) elements. This reflects the maneuver's nature as awareness, not intentional spin training.

Recovery before full development

VII.D.S1 specifies recovery before the spin fully develops. The phases of a spin:

  1. Incipient phase — first quarter to half rotation. The airplane is rotating in stall + yaw but the rotation hasn't stabilized yet. Recovery here is easiest and costs the least altitude.
  2. Fully developed phase — sustained rotation at a stable rate. Recovery requires more specific technique and considerably more altitude.
  3. Recovery phase — rotation has stopped; the airplane is in a steep dive; the pilot pulls out.

The Private Pilot standard is recovery from the incipient phase only. Allowing the spin to develop into the fully-developed phase before initiating recovery is a bust — the standard isn't "recover from any phase," it's "recover before development."

In practice, the DPE may simulate the incipient condition by inducing an uncoordinated stall (typically a power-off stall with one wing dropping); the pilot demonstrates recognition and PARE recovery in the first second or two of rotation.

Recovery technique — PARE

VII.D.K3 + VII.D.S1 together require the pilot to know and demonstrate the PARE sequence:

  1. P — Power idle: throttle to idle.
  2. A — Ailerons neutral: center the ailerons; don't fight the spin with aileron.
  3. R — Rudder opposite: full rudder opposite to the direction of rotation; hold until rotation stops.
  4. E — Elevator forward: push elevator forward through neutral to break the stall AoA.

This is the only place in the PPL curriculum where PARE is the correct sequence. The normal stall recovery (B, C) uses a different sequence (AoA reduction first, then power, then wings level). PARE is specifically for the stall-plus-yaw rotation condition.

Recognition is the standard before recovery

VII.D.K1, K2 require the pilot to understand and recognize the conditions that produce spins. Recognition is the input to recovery — a pilot who can't recognize incipient spin can't initiate the recovery in time.

The DPE may ask oral knowledge questions about:

  • The aerodynamic conditions for a spin.
  • Common scenarios where spins occur (base-to-final, departure with uncoordinated rudder).
  • The PARE sequence and why each step is in that order.

A pilot who can articulate this clearly demonstrates the awareness the task requires.

What the standard does NOT require

  • No intentional fully-developed spin entry. Pilots do not perform intentional spins in PPL training.
  • No recovery from beyond the incipient phase. Recovery from fully-developed spins is CFI / aerobatic curriculum.
  • No specific altitude loss tolerance. Incipient recovery typically costs 100–200 ft; the standard doesn't publish a ceiling.

The placarded-against-spins reality. Many trainer airplanes (including most Cessna 152/172 variants in standard certification) are limited in spin training to specific conditions, or placarded against intentional spins entirely. The PPL standard reflects this — the pilot demonstrates awareness without actually doing the maneuver in airplanes not certified for it.
