Methods to determine position when lost

Lost isn't a mystery to solve in a panic — it's a position to re-establish with the tools already in the cockpit. The pilots who handle it calmly are the ones who work a method instead of staring at the ground hoping the next town looks familiar.

First, stabilize

Before you fix anything, buy yourself room to think:

  • Hold your heading. A wandering airplane makes every method useless, and it quietly invalidates the one estimate you still have. A held heading keeps your dead-reckoning position alive.
  • Note the time. Your last known position, plus heading, time, and groundspeed, is an estimate of where you are right now — but only if you know when you were last sure.
  • Climb if you can. Altitude widens your view of landmarks, extends radio and radar range, and buys gliding options and thinking time. (The full case for climbing is the first of the 4 C's in R2.)

Stabilizing first is the single move that turns a developing panic back into a procedure. The instinct when the ground stops making sense is to start turning to "get a better look" — which is exactly wrong, because it destroys the dead-reckoning estimate that's often your fastest way home. Wings level, heading steady, clock noted: that's the foundation every method below is built on.

Fix position by pilotage

Look for a unique, unmistakable landmark — a distinctively shaped lake, a city, a highway-railroad-river junction — the same landmark-quality hierarchy from VI.A.K3 and S2. A generic feature (one of several parallel roads, a small field) won't help; you need something there's only one of.

Then work from the ground to the chart: find that feature on the sectional and you've got your position. If nothing is identifiable yet, fall back to dead reckoning — from your last sure fix, project heading × time × groundspeed to a search area, then concentrate your search there instead of scanning the whole horizon.

Fix position electronically

  • VOR cross-radial fix — tune two VORs, center each CDI with a FROM flag, and read the two radials. Where those two lines cross on the chart is you. Two lines, one position.
  • GPS — the fastest answer if you have it and trust it; the moving map simply shows you where you are.
  • DME gives your distance from a station, which combined with a single radial is a complete position by itself.

Worked example of the cross-fix: you're somewhere northeast of two VORs. Tune the first — call it CTV — center the needle with a FROM flag, and read 045: you're on CTV's 045 radial, a line running northeast from the station. Now tune the second, PLV, center it, and read 310: you're on PLV's 310 radial. Draw both radials on the chart and the point where they cross is your position. Two stations, two lines, one answer — and it works with nothing but two nav radios and a chart, even if the GPS is dead.

Let someone else fix it

You don't have to solve this alone. ATC can radar-identify you: tell a controller roughly where you think you are, and they can pick your target out and tell you exactly. Facilities can also give you vectors or a DF (direction-finding) steer — headings to fly toward help. How to ask, and the mindset that makes asking easy, is K2 and R2; the point here is that position-finding is a team sport the moment you decide to use the team.
