Maintain situational awareness and aircraft control during the diversion

The classic diversion failure isn't picking the wrong field — it's flying into the ground, or busting airspace, while heads-down planning the diversion.

Aviate first

The order is not negotiable: Aviate, Navigate, Communicate — the through-line that runs all the way to the emergency procedures in IX.B. Fly the airplane to the ACS standard — altitude ±200 ft, heading ±15° (PA.VI.C.S3)before you bury your head in the chart or the GPS.

The mechanics: trim it, point it roughly the right way, then compute. It's the same fly-first discipline as the timing checks in VI.A.S3 — the math can wait two seconds; the airplane cannot. A diversion that ends in an altitude bust or an unusual attitude has solved the small problem by creating a bigger one.

The trap is specific and worth picturing: head down twisting the GPS, the airplane slips into a 15° bank, the nose drops, airspeed builds, and ten seconds later you're 300 feet low in a descending turn — toward the very terrain you were maneuvering to avoid. Two seconds of "fly the airplane" between glances prevents the entire chain.

Keeping the picture

Situational awareness during a diversion means holding three things at once:

  • Where you are — position, and which way the wind is drifting you.
  • What's around you — terrain, airspace, and the weather you're maneuvering against.
  • What you've got — fuel and time remaining, counting down.

Lose track of any one and the diversion breeds a second emergency: you reach the field but bust the Class B on the way, or you fly a tidy heading straight into rising terrain. Use every tool together — GPS for position, the chart for terrain and airspace, ATC for help and traffic — and keep cross-checking. The pilot who holds the whole picture turns a diversion into a non-event; the one who tunnels onto a single instrument turns it into a story other pilots learn from.

Manage the workload deliberately: fly, do one task, fly again. Trim the airplane, take one glance at the GPS or the chart, look back outside to check attitude and altitude, then take the next glance. Chunking the planning into glances — instead of one long heads-down session — is what keeps the airplane where you put it while your attention is divided three ways.

If you have an autopilot, this is exactly the moment to use it: hand the airplane to heading-and-altitude hold so your two seconds of "fly" become "confirm the autopilot is still doing what I told it" (the monitoring habit from VI.B.R2), freeing real attention for the chart and the radio.
