How to fly a short-field takeoff: max runway, full power, V_X to clear, V_Y after
A short-field takeoff is the precision variant of the normal takeoff (A) — flown when the runway is short, an obstacle blocks the departure path, or both. The procedure is built around three ideas: use the full available runway so distance isn't wasted, apply full power before brake release so every foot of roll uses takeoff power, and climb at V_X (best angle of climb) until obstacles are cleared, then transition to V_Y.
V_X is the speed; obstacle clearance is the reason. If there's no obstacle to clear, V_Y is faster and uses less runway in total. V_X only earns its keep when there's something at the runway end.
Setup
- Complete the before-takeoff checklist; flaps per POH (typically 10°, sometimes 20° depending on the airplane).
- Position flight controls for the wind before entering the runway (same principle as A).
- Brief the obstacle mentally: how tall, how far. Confirm the published short-field distance from the POH for current conditions covers it.
Use the maximum runway
- Taxi to the very beginning of the runway — the threshold markings, not the runway-edge displaced markings if any.
- Align with the centerline at the threshold (V.E.S1).
- Hold the brakes firmly.
Full power before brake release
- Apply takeoff power with brakes still held (V.E.S2). Confirm full RPM and normal indications.
- Release the brakes only after confirming takeoff power and instruments are normal. This is the short-field distinctive — every foot of runway is rolling at takeoff power.
- Maintain centerline with rudder (right rudder for left-turning tendencies — same as A).
Rotation
- At the manufacturer's recommended short-field rotation speed (often the same as normal V_R, sometimes lower), apply back pressure to set the takeoff pitch attitude (V.E.S2).
- The airplane should fly off cleanly. Don't yank — over-rotation in a short-field takeoff costs both distance and altitude.
Climb at V_X until clear
- After liftoff, pitch for V_X (best angle of climb).
- Hold V_X through the obstacle clearance phase (V.E.S3). The airplane is climbing at the steepest angle it can sustain — the most altitude per unit of horizontal distance.
- The pitch attitude at V_X is higher than at V_Y. Verify by airspeed; the pitch picture alone can deceive.
Transition to V_Y after the obstacle
- After clearing the obstacle (or after a safe altitude if there's no obstacle), lower the nose to transition to V_Y.
- Continue climb at V_Y +10 / −5 KIAS through the remainder of the initial climb (V.E.S3) — same standard as the normal takeoff (A).
- Retract flaps per POH (typically once well past the obstacle and at a safe altitude).
Common pitfall: holding V_X too long. V_X is slower than V_Y — climbing at V_X for extended periods wastes the time and altitude that V_Y would gain. Transition as soon as the obstacle is cleared; don't hold V_X to the traffic pattern.
