Fly the pattern to ACS standards

Read the signs, fly the recommended pattern, correct for wind, keep the runway in sight, hold altitude and airspeed, stay spaced. The examiner watches whether the pattern is something you fly or something that happens to you.

the tolerances

Easy numbers on a calm day. They come apart on a windy one, and when the radio gets busy.

arrive already set up

What predicts a clean pattern is what you did before you got there: weather early, runway early, at pattern altitude before you are near the pattern — a descending nose hides the sky it moves into.

At a non-towered field the standard entry is a 45° to the midpoint of the downwind at TPA. To overfly for the sock, cross 500 to 1,000 feet above TPA, clear the pattern on the upwind side, descend, and come back to the 45.

the rectangle is a ground track

Every leg is where the airplane goes over the ground, not what the heading indicator says.

Wind favoring the runway means the downwind leg has a tailwind: numbers, abeam point, and base turn all arrive early. Fly the calm-day sight picture and you turn late and fight an overshoot. Start down abeam the numbers and turn base sooner than it feels right.

Base is a crosswind. On a left downwind with a headwind on final, it blows you toward the runway — crab away, or you arrive early and fast. On a right pattern it pushes you away. The crosswind leg after takeoff is base's mirror image.

Bank angle changes with groundspeed: fast downwind to base takes more bank than slow base onto a headwind final — which is why base-to-final kills people. Never fix an overshoot with rudder.

abeam the numbers

The moment the numbers pass off your shoulder organizes everything: power back, first notch of flaps, descent begins. Same place every lap, so base, final, and the flare arrive in the same place — and a problem shows up early, not on short final.

keep the runway in sight

On downwind the runway sits at a consistent place on the wing or strut, a half to three-quarters of a mile out for a light single. Closer, and base and final compress into a rushed, steep approach; farther, and you set up a long, low, dragged-in final.

spacing and the airplane you cannot see

The pattern is full of airplanes with no radio, or that can't hear yours. Space yourself off traffic you can see.

Lost sight of the airplane ahead? Say so and extend — it costs nothing. If you can't reacquire, leave on the upwind side, climb, and re-enter. At a towered field, tell the controller the moment you lose a target you reported in sight: one who believes you have it stops watching it for you.

still governs right-of-way, and the pattern direction at non-towered fields in Class G — but neither keeps you alive on a busy Saturday. Looking outside does.

what a failed pattern looks like

Rarely one big error — a chain: arriving high, so the descent starts late; the base turn is rushed; you overshoot; you make a steep, uncoordinated correction at 500 feet. Every link is small and fixable when it appears.
