Common errors and how to fix them
Soft-field landing errors mostly come from reverting to normal-landing (B) habits at touchdown — releasing back-elevator at the moment the wheels touch. Almost every fault below is some version of "the maneuver didn't continue past touchdown." The seven cover the common cases.
1. Hard touchdown
What it looks like: the airplane touches down with a perceptible thump; sink rate at contact is noticeably higher than a normal landing.
Why: insufficient flare extension — the airplane was still descending when the wheels contacted the surface. Pilot stopped pulling too early.
Fix: continue back pressure through the flare beyond the normal-landing point. The touchdown should feel almost like a stall — the airplane settles to the surface because it can't fly anymore, not because the pilot stopped flying it.
2. Releasing back-elevator at touchdown
What it looks like: the airplane touches down on the mains, then the nose drops immediately to the surface, often firmly.
Why: the pilot's instinct at touchdown is to "be done" — the elevator comes forward at the moment the wheels touch.
Fix: back pressure continues after touchdown. Elevator authority will fade with airspeed; let the airplane decide when to settle the nose. Holding back-elevator with no effect is fine; releasing it too early is not.
3. Drift on touchdown (crosswind)
What it looks like: the wheels skip sideways at the moment of touchdown — same failure mode as the normal landing (B), but more consequential on soft surfaces because side-loaded gear can dig in.
Why: insufficient crosswind correction. The wing-low side-slip wasn't established, or the crab wasn't fully converted.
Fix: wing-low side-slip from short final (per B). Touchdown on the upwind main wheel first; downwind main and nose follow.
4. Applying brakes during rollout
What it looks like: the pilot reaches for the brakes after touchdown out of normal-landing habit. On a truly soft surface, the wheels may lock or skid; in extreme cases, the airplane can pitch forward.
Why: habit from normal landings. The soft-field procedure specifically avoids braking.
Fix: no brakes on a soft-field rollout unless absolutely necessary (e.g., obstacle at the runway end). The surface drag provides the deceleration; let it.
5. Nose wheel digging in during rollout
What it looks like: the nose wheel touches the surface with the airplane still at a meaningful speed, sinks in or hits a divot, and decelerates the nose suddenly.
Why: back pressure relaxed too early in the rollout, allowing the nose to come down before airspeed had bled past elevator-authority threshold.
Fix: keep the nose off the surface as long as the elevator has authority. When it stops, it stops — but don't help it.
6. Approach too fast → float and hard touchdown
What it looks like: fast on final → long float in ground effect → hard touchdown at the end of the float because the airplane runs out of runway before bleeding speed.
Why: treating the soft-field landing as "normal landing with extended float" without an aim point correction. Fast approach + extended flare = float past the touchdown zone.
Fix: on speed, just like a normal landing. The slow touchdown comes from the flare extension, not from a fast approach.
7. Wrong-surface decision
What it looks like: the pilot uses soft-field technique on a paved runway, or normal-landing technique on a clearly soft surface.
Why: treating the surface decision as "what does the chart say" rather than "what does the surface look like."
Fix: observe the surface on downwind. If the runway looks wet, grassy, recently re-paved, or noticeably uneven, the soft-field technique is appropriate. If it's clean and dry, the normal landing applies.
How errors compound. Releasing back pressure at touchdown (#2) is the root cause of nose-wheel digging (#5). Hard touchdown (#1) and float (#6) are opposite-direction speed errors that share a single fix — be on speed at the round-out. The fix to almost every soft-field landing error: the maneuver doesn't end at touchdown. Touchdown is the start of the rollout, not its end.
