How to fly the maneuver

How to fly a soft-field takeoff: full back-elevator, no stopping, fly in ground effect

A soft-field takeoff modifies the normal takeoff (A) for surfaces that don't roll well — grass, dirt, sand, snow, mud — and for drag-sensitive surfaces like long wet grass. The procedure is built around two ideas: keep weight off the nose wheel to prevent sinking and damage, and fly the airplane off the surface as soon as it can fly, even if that means liftoff at slower than normal V_R, into ground effect.

You can't stop on a soft field. Stopping lets the wheels sink. The continuous-motion technique — taxi at speed, transition onto the runway without pausing, full power immediately — is the most distinctive feature of the maneuver.

Setup

  1. Complete the before-takeoff checklist while still in motion if possible. Flaps per POH (typically 10° to provide some lift early).
  2. Position flight controls for the wind (V.C.S1) — full aileron into the wind for crosswind.
  3. Full back-elevator before entering the runway and throughout taxi (V.C.S2). This keeps weight off the nose wheel during taxi over the soft surface.

Taxi to runway and power application

  1. Taxi onto the runway without stopping. A pause on the soft surface lets the wheels dig in.
  2. Apply takeoff power smoothly but immediately as you align with the centerline. There's no second run-up on the runway — you committed when you entered.
  3. Continue full back-elevator. The nose should be light on the strut almost immediately.

Takeoff roll

  1. Pitch attitude is the primary control — hold a nose-high attitude (more than normal-takeoff pitch) by feel, not by reading the airspeed.
  2. As the airplane gains lift, the nose comes up and the nose wheel leaves the ground at a very low speed (sometimes below 25 KIAS).
  3. As soon as the main wheels leave the surface (often at airspeed well below the normal V_R), allow the airplane to fly off into ground effect.
  4. Stay in ground effect. Hold a level attitude a few feet above the surface — don't climb. Climbing out of ground effect at the slow airspeed at which you took off would put the airplane behind the power curve.

Accelerate in ground effect

  1. Maintain a low altitude (typically 5–15 ft AGL, within one wingspan of the surface) while the airplane accelerates to V_Y.
  2. Pitch trim is usually still near takeoff trim; adjust slightly as the airplane accelerates.
  3. The airplane is in ground effect for the duration of the acceleration — induced drag is reduced, so the airplane gains speed faster than it would in clean air.

Climb-out

  1. At V_Y, initiate a climb out of ground effect.
  2. Climb at V_Y +10/−5 KIAS through the initial climb (V.C.S4) — same tolerance as the normal takeoff (A).
  3. Apply right rudder against left-turning tendencies — same as the normal climb (A).

Common pitfall: climbing too early. A pilot who lifts off in ground effect at 35 KIAS and immediately pulls into a climb attitude climbs out of ground effect into clean air at 35 KIAS — well below V_Y and possibly below V_X. The airplane mushes, sinks, or stalls. Stay in ground effect until V_Y.
