How to recover from unusual attitudes: recognize, nose-high recovery, nose-low recovery
Recovery from unusual flight attitudes is the safety-cornerstone task of Area VIII. The pilot's eyes are closed while a safety pilot (or DPE) maneuvers the airplane into an unusual attitude — nose-high or nose-low, banked, often at uncomfortable airspeeds. The pilot opens their eyes, scans the instruments, interprets the attitude, and applies the appropriate recovery sequence — which differs between nose-high and nose-low.
The misframing to anticipate. "Pull up to recover from a dive." Wrong. Pulling up while still banked produces an accelerated stall at higher load factor — the airplane stalls in the bank instead of recovering. Level the wings first, then pitch out. This is the central pedagogical lesson of the maneuver.
Setup and recognition
- Eyes closed during the entry. The safety pilot maneuvers the airplane through bank, pitch, and altitude changes — typically 30–90 seconds — to disorient the pilot's vestibular system.
- Eyes open at the cue. The pilot's first task is scan the instruments, not feel the airplane. The vestibular system is unreliable after the entry; the instruments are the only valid data.
- Identify the attitude in 3–5 seconds:
- AI — pitch (above or below the horizon line) and bank (left or right).
- ASI — airspeed building (nose-low) or decreasing (nose-high).
- VSI — descending (nose-low) or climbing (nose-high).
- Altimeter — unwinding (nose-low) or increasing (nose-high).
- Categorize: nose-high or nose-low. The two have different recovery sequences.
Nose-high recovery
Conditions: pitch above horizon, airspeed decreasing, VSI showing climb (or close to zero if heavily nose-high). Bank may be present.
The recovery sequence:
- Reduce power (smoothly to idle if airspeed is bleeding to stall warning; otherwise to a low setting).
- Lower the nose to or slightly below the horizon — forward elevator pressure.
- Level the wings with coordinated aileron and rudder.
- Recover to coordinated, level flight — re-establish straight-and-level cruise.
Why this order:
- Power reduction first prevents accelerating into the dive that follows.
- Pitch down breaks the AoA approach to stall — the airplane was decelerating, so AoA was high.
- Wings level because the bank, if present, isn't constraining; pitch is the priority.
Nose-high has no accelerated-stall trap because the airplane was already slow; pulling out of the nose-high attitude is pushing forward, which reduces AoA.
Nose-low recovery
Conditions: pitch below horizon, airspeed building, VSI showing descent, altimeter unwinding. Bank is almost always present (the airplane fell into the bank as the nose dropped).
The recovery sequence:
- Reduce power (smoothly to idle to prevent further acceleration).
- Level the wings FIRST — coordinated aileron and rudder. Do not pitch up yet.
- Pitch up smoothly to level flight only after the wings are level.
- Recover to coordinated, level flight — re-establish straight-and-level cruise.
Why this order:
- Power reduction first prevents accelerating past V_NE.
- Wings level BEFORE pitch up is the safety-critical step. Pulling up while still banked:
- Produces load factor in the bank (V_S × √n; at 60° bank, n = 2 — stall speed doubles).
- Creates the accelerated stall trap — the airplane stalls at much higher airspeed than wings-level, and the stall may be in a steep bank with limited recovery margin.
- Wastes altitude in a non-recovering pull.
- Pitch up smoothly once wings are level. Don't yank; smooth pull to level flight. The wings are now level; the load factor scales only with the pitch input.
Why the sequences differ
The two recoveries are different because the dominant risk is different:
- Nose-high: the dominant risk is stall. Power reduction + pitch down break the stall margin.
- Nose-low: the dominant risk is overstress (overspeed or accelerated stall in bank). Power reduction + wings-level pull-out manage the structural and AoA risk.
The same airplane in two different attitudes requires two different sequences. Conflating them — applying nose-high technique to a nose-low recovery — produces the accelerated stall in bank that the maneuver is built to prevent.
Verify recovery
After the recovery:
- Re-establish the straight-and-level scan (VIII.A pattern).
- Verify the attitude, altitude, heading, and airspeed are stable.
- Trim for the new configuration.
The maneuver demonstrates recognition + sequence selection + execution. Each of these is evaluated.
Common pitfall: the instinctive pull-up in nose-low. Every pilot's first reaction to a steep dive is to pull back. In a wings-level dive, this works. In a banked dive (which is what nose-low recoveries usually are), pulling tightens the turn into the ground and may stall the airplane in the bank. Level wings first, then pitch. Drill this until it's automatic; the instinct will fight you.
