How to fly a normal takeoff and climb: setup, roll, rotation, initial climb

A normal takeoff is the baseline procedure every later takeoff variation (soft-field, short-field, crosswind) modifies. The structure is the same every time: line up on the centerline, apply power smoothly, rotate at the recommended airspeed, climb at V_Y until clear of obstacles and traffic, then transition to cruise climb. The technique is mostly about doing it the same way every time so deviations from the procedure are easy to catch.

The DPE is watching the sequence, not just the outcome. Centerline → power → indications check → rotation → V_Y → wind-drift correction. Skipping or rushing a step is a more common bust than executing a step poorly.

Setup

  1. Complete the before-takeoff checklist before entering the runway. Run-up done, flaps set per POH (typically up or 10°), trim set for takeoff.
  2. Position flight controls for the wind before entering the runway (V.A.S2): full aileron into the wind on takeoff roll for crosswinds.
  3. Verify the assigned/correct runway (V.A.S1) — read back the clearance, check the runway numbers on the threshold, check the heading bug matches.

Takeoff roll

  1. Align with the centerline. Hold a visual reference at the far end of the runway as your tracking aim point.
  2. Apply takeoff power smoothly (V.A.S3) — three to four seconds from idle to full. Throttle slammed forward causes engine surge and poor directional control.
  3. Confirm engine and flight instruments: full RPM, oil pressure rising, airspeed alive. If anything is wrong here, abort — you have full runway available.
  4. Maintain centerline with rudder (right rudder on most singles to counter P-factor and torque). Ailerons only stay deflected if there's crosswind.
  5. As airspeed builds, aileron deflection reduces (full crosswind initially → wings level by rotation in light wind, partial in stronger wind).

Rotation

  1. At the manufacturer's recommended rotation speed (typical 50–60 KIAS for trainers), apply back pressure to set the takeoff pitch attitude (V.A.S4).
  2. The airplane should fly off smoothly — don't yank it off. If it isn't flying yet, hold the pitch and let speed build.
  3. Accelerate to V_Y (best rate of climb) in the climb attitude.

Initial climb

  1. Maintain V_Y +10/−5 KIAS (V.A.S5).
  2. Wind-drift correction through the initial climb — crab into the crosswind. The centerline of the runway should remain straight off your tail.
  3. Trim for hands-off climb. Trim is early, not after — flying out of trim wastes attention.
  4. Above 500–700 ft AGL (or per local procedures), reduce power and pitch to cruise climb speed for cooling and ground-track ease.

Common pitfall: rotating before V_R. A premature rotation at, say, 45 KIAS in an airplane that should rotate at 55 may fly off the runway but is behind the power curve — the airplane sinks back, mushes down the runway, and either touches back or stalls. Wait for the published V_R.
