Principles & why: ground track, wind drift, and bank-with-groundspeed

The rectangular course is the simplest maneuver that teaches the foundational ground-reference principle: in wind, bank angle must vary with groundspeed if the ground track is going to stay constant. Every later ground reference maneuver — S-turns (C), turns around a point (D), and the traffic pattern itself — applies this same principle.

Heading is not ground track

With no wind, the airplane's heading and its ground track are identical. Point the nose where you want to go and you'll get there.

With wind, they diverge:

  • On a headwind leg, groundspeed drops but the path tracks straight down the nose.
  • On a tailwind leg, groundspeed rises but the path still tracks down the nose.
  • On a crosswind leg, the wind blows the airplane sideways. To hold a straight ground track, you must crab into the wind — point the nose into the wind by a few degrees so the resulting motion over the ground is straight down the intended track.

Bank-with-groundspeed: the turn principle

A turn at constant bank produces a circle of fixed radius through the air mass. That circle drifts with the wind. From the ground, a fixed-radius air circle in a steady wind traces an oval — wider on the downwind side, narrower on the upwind side.

What this maneuver teaches

The traffic-pattern rehearsal: a quarter-mile track around a field, altitude and spacing constant. The wind never stops working on you — the bank and crab that hold this track are the same ones that hold a pattern.

The rule under all three: bank steepest when the ground moves fastest beneath you (downwind), shallowest headed upwind, and crab on the crosswind segments. ACS: altitude ±100 ft, airspeed ±10 kt. Figures after FAA-H-8083-3 Ch. 6.

To get a square 90° corner over the ground in wind, the bank must change continuously through each turn:

  • Steeper when the wind is pushing you with the turn (downwind→base): you need to "out-turn" the wind.
  • Shallower when the wind is pushing you opposite the turn (upwind→crosswind): the wind helps you turn.

The AFH frames it as: bank angle is proportional to groundspeed at the moment of the turn.

Worked example: 15-kt wind from the north

Field is aligned north–south. Wind is 15 kt from the north (i.e., wind blowing southward). You enter on a downwind south leg.

  • South (downwind) leg: groundspeed = TAS + 15. Highest. As you approach the south corner, the airplane is moving fastest over the ground. The downwind→west turn needs the steepest bank to keep the corner from sliding wide.
  • West (crosswind) leg: wind is on your right (from the north). Crab to the right (into the wind) by 5–10° to hold a straight westward ground track. Groundspeed equals TAS.
  • North (upwind) leg: groundspeed = TAS − 15. Lowest. The upwind→east turn needs the shallowest bank — at fixed bank, the wind would push you out away from the field; at reduced bank, the turn rate matches the wind.
  • East (crosswind) leg: wind is on your left. Crab to the left.

The four corner banks are a sequence — steep, medium, shallow, medium — not a constant.

Why we fly it as a Private Pilot

The rectangular course is the first maneuver where the brain has to track ground reference and aircraft control simultaneously. It's pre-traffic-pattern training: every traffic pattern in the country is a rectangular course flown around a runway, with the same bank-with-groundspeed adjustments at base and crosswind. Mastering this maneuver is what makes pattern work feel automatic later.

It's also the conceptual foundation for the harder ground reference maneuvers — S-turns across a road (C) and turns around a point (D) — both of which require continuously varying bank, not just four discrete corner changes.
