Common errors and how to fix them
Soft-field takeoff errors mostly come from reverting to normal-takeoff (A) habits on a procedure that's intentionally different. The seven below cover the common faults; almost all of them stem from forgetting that the soft-field technique is about flying early and staying in ground effect, not about doing a normal takeoff on a rougher surface.
1. Stopping on the runway before takeoff power
What it looks like: the airplane taxis onto the runway, comes to a full stop on the centerline, then begins the takeoff roll. On soft surfaces, the airplane may sink during the brief stop and bury itself.
Why: reflexive habit from normal takeoffs — pilot wants to align with the centerline, brake, then power up.
Fix: continuous motion from taxiway through power application. Plan the turn onto the runway so the airplane is aligned with the centerline as the throttle reaches full.
2. Insufficient back-elevator during taxi and takeoff roll
What it looks like: the nose wheel stays loaded during the roll, ploughing the soft surface. Takeoff distance is longer than expected.
Why: half-back-elevator instead of full back-elevator, or releasing back pressure during the roll.
Fix: full back-elevator from taxi onto runway, sustained until the nose wheel lifts. The DPE looks for visible deflection.
3. Trying to rotate at normal V_R
What it looks like: pilot holds the takeoff attitude and waits for normal V_R (e.g., 55 KIAS) before lifting off. By that point, the airplane has used more runway than necessary.
Why: sticking to normal-takeoff habits.
Fix: liftoff as soon as the airplane can fly — often well below normal V_R. The criterion is feel, not airspeed: when the airplane is producing enough lift to fly, it will lift its main wheels off the surface as the elevator pulls. Trust it.
4. Climbing out of ground effect prematurely
What it looks like: the airplane lifts off at, say, 35 KIAS and the pilot immediately pulls into a climb attitude. The airplane settles back to the surface, sinks, or stalls.
Why: treating "I'm flying" as "I should climb." On a soft-field takeoff, those are two different events separated by 10–20 knots of acceleration.
Fix: stay in ground effect at a level attitude until V_Y is reached. The airplane is flying, but not at climbing speed yet. Wait.
5. Climbing too high in ground effect
What it looks like: the airplane is flying level 25–30 ft above the runway during the acceleration phase — far enough above the surface that it's no longer in ground effect.
Why: over-correction for the "climbing too early" error, or visual cue confusion.
Fix: ground effect extends roughly one wingspan — for a typical trainer, 5–15 ft AGL. Stay close to the surface; the cue is "I can clearly see the runway markings going by under the airplane."
6. Prop strike from low nose attitude
What it looks like: during the taxi or takeoff roll, the nose pitches forward and the prop tip strikes the surface.
Why: failure to maintain full back-elevator, or the airplane hit a divot at the moment back-elevator was released.
Fix: full back-elevator throughout. If the surface is rough enough to cause significant pitch oscillations, abort and find a different surface.
7. Crosswind correction lost during ground-effect acceleration
What it looks like: the airplane drifts off the runway centerline during the level acceleration phase in ground effect.
Why: in ground effect at low speed, crosswind drift is significant; the pilot may not have established the crab during the level segment.
Fix: crab immediately on liftoff. Maintain wind correction throughout the ground-effect acceleration; the runway centerline (extended) should track straight off the tail.
How errors compound. Errors #1, #2, and #3 are all "reverting to normal-takeoff habits" — they tend to occur together if any one of them occurs. Errors #4 and #5 are opposite-direction over-corrections to the same underlying challenge — judging ground effect altitude. The fix to almost every soft-field error: mentally commit to the procedure before entering the runway. Say it aloud: "Full back, no stopping, fly early, stay in ground effect to V_Y."
